7-day manu amazon expedition

This 7-day trip will take you from Cusco, through the tropical foothills of the Andes, and onwards into Manu National Park deep in the Amazon Jungle.

Manu National Park is a protected area of the Peruvian rainforest rich in biodiversity. You'll begin your journey there with a spectacular bus ride downwards through the cloud forests of the eastern slopes of the Andes, where you'll spend a day in the Antiacolla Mountains in the transitional zone between the mountains and the jungle, before continuing your journey along the Alto Madre de Dios River into the Amazon Basin. You'll stay in the Matsiguenka and Maquisapayoj lodges as you travel through the jungle, taking day and night treks in search of wildlife, explore the Salvador and Otorongo oxbow lakes to see giant river otters, visit a macaw clay lick, climb an observation tower, meet the native Machiguenga people, and spend a night at a mammal clay lick to observe nocturnal animals such as the tapir. The whole way you'll be accompanied by a professional nature guide who'll educate you on any wildlife you encounter.

Itinerary:

Day 1

Morning pick-up from Cusco

8 hour bus journey down Andes

Stop at Ninamarca pre-Inca cemetery

Stop at colonial village of Paucartambo

Cloud forest nature walk

Afternoon arrival in Bamboo Lodge

Dinner and briefing on jungle trip

Day 2

Bus to port of Atalaya

Walk to observe birds and visit orchid garden

Boat from Atalaya to Pantiacolla Mountains

Mountain trek in search of wildlife

Night walk to see insects, frogs etc.

Day 3

Morning boat to parrot clay lick

Boat into Manu National Park

Arrival at Albergue Matsiguenka

Optional night jungle trek

Day 4

Morning trek through jungle trails

Visit to Cocha Salvador Lake by catamaran

Afternoon trek through jungle trails

Visit to 18m observation tower to see Cocha Otorongo Lake

Trek to meet Machiguenga people

Day 5

6 hour boat along Manu River to Maquisapayoj Reserve

Trek to mammal clay lick

Night jungle trek

Option to sleep at mammal clay lick or lodge

Day 6

Morning boat to macaw clay lick in Blanquillo

1.5 hour trek to mammal salt lick

Day 7

Breakfast

1.5 hour boat journey to Colorado gold mine

1 hour car journey to Santa Rosa

Transport back to Cusco (evening arrival)
